In this day and age, where diseases such as PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Disorder Syndrome) and ASF (African Swine Fever) are emerging and threatening, it is important to protect the health of the pig herd. As a result, producers want to be able to take steps to keep their herds safe and profitable. The biosecurity process is the first step in disease prevention and the most effective and preventive means of disease control. Preventing disease outbreaks is key to maintaining pig health, welfare and yield, and it can lead to a great return on investment. Proper adherence to a biosecurity regime can help control and manage the current health status of the farm while preventing disease outbreaks.

The most important principle that farm managers should follow is the principle of zoning. Establishing different zones on the farm, ranking the hygiene level from highest to lowest, will help maintain high biosecurity standards. Zoning management is implemented to develop the daily workflow of the farm.
